The bird's beak, A2 Steel Heart that I have, which is slightly longer than the original ATS34 Steel Heart, was marketed as the Steel Heart II when I bought it in 1994. I have a Tactical Knives magazine with this knife on the cover and it is referred to as a Steel Heart II. So when I read the term "Steel Heart II" my mental image is of a bird's beaked knife.

I have recently seen several references to straight-handled, non-birds beak knives as Steel Heart II's. These are also referred to as Steel Heart II's on the badmojo site. There is currently a non-bird's beak straight handled Steel Heart on the For Sale forum and it is referred to as a Steel Heart II.

So which is the real Steel Heart II?

This is an issue I have been wondering about myself, but unlike MikeH, I haven't had the gumption to pose the question. Thanks for bringing it up Mike.

What say you Busse experts?

I was under the impression that the line went

Steel Heart
Steel Heart 2 (bird beak, early models all A2)
Steel Heart Straight Handle (A2 on early then INFI)
Steel Heart E (ALL INFI)
and Now Fusion

Well a few of us were talking about this at the blade west show. As near as we could figure out the steel heart 1 was ats-34 and blade lenght was less than 7". The steel heart 2 birds beak was a-2 and 7 1/2 " blade. There were also straight handled non birds beak steel heart 2's that could have been made from a-2 or infi. I'm not an expert by any means but just thought i'd relay the conversation.

By the way, if anyone is interested i've got the original catalog and price list that i received in 1996 when i ordered my steel heart 2 by phone. I also happened to find the thank you card that came after i received my order. Ah the memories. :D

I don't have a scanner or i'd just post them up. A digital camera doesn't work unfortunately. I might look into buying a scanner or mailing the catalog to someone who does (providing i can find a trustworthy soul ;) ).
