From our local spring manufacture I can get spring steel wire cutoff's, from 5/16-5/8 diameter, and generally a few feet long. The guys thought the astm a229 compared to 1074 or better, and the other was a chrome silicon wire wich wasn't quite as hard, but more resilient.

So can anyone tell me what kind of levels of carbon ect are/should/could be in this steel.

When you get more info, I would be interested if some of the bar turns out to be 1074, in the 5/8ths John.
