i have acsess to numerous saw blades, some 42" in dia.1/8 thick some 3/16and 1/4 " and the problem is that i have no idea what kind of steel it is.are there any companys out there that could analize the steel so it could be properly heat treated? any info would be greatly appreciated...!

Most sources I've seen say saw blades are made from L6. Whether or not this is true of the ones you've got, there is probably no way to tell for sure. Best bet is try some tests on the metal treating it as if it is L6 and see how you like the results!

Chisel; we have a tremendous data base here on this forum. Most questions have been asked numerous times. I suggest doing a search before you post a question. This will often yield more information than a question, as on common subjects, several threads are sometimes available.

Searching under 'steel identification' yields this thread:
http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum51/HTML/000142.html

Which is recent and covers the subject thoroughly. Hope this helps, Walt

Chisel is looking for someone that test metals. He wants to send a piece out to find out what these saw blades are made of.If you test metals or know someone that test metals please contact me or chisel.
Thanks,
