I was wondering. Can someone point out a good reference book for steel types. I have a variety(A2,D2,S7,4140,M1,+various spring steels)from a machine shop friend who saved me scraps. Thank's for feeding the fire! I would like to be able to determine the pros & cons of each. I'm also interested in the differences between 440C & ATF34. Thanks in advance.

David Boye's book Step by Step knifemaking is a great reference for steels. However you have the best reference at your fingertips and it's FREE.
Do a search of the archives in Shop talk under each steel type. You will find a wealth of first hand info
