Just some random information to throw out to you guys.

I am an engineering student at Western Michigan University and I have recently been looking for some info on different kinds of steels, non-ferrous alloys, ceramics, composites, etc. While looking around on the web I found Alro Steel at http://www.alro.com/DIVSteel/steel.htm I contacted them and told them what I was looking for, and they sent me a really great book. It has the composition specs for many different grades of carbon steels and tool steels, it even some heat treating info for the tool steels. There is also info about alloy steels like high chrome etc, aluminum and some plastics.

I haven't had the opportunity to order from them as of yet, but their book is a good reasource for tech specs, and their staff was very helpfull.

I know the book you are talking about. It gives copious amounts of info on every aspect of steel usage. That's where I found out why it took more grinding belts to grind D2 blades than it takes to grind A2 blades.

You might find Alro's prices high for the small quantities an amateur knifemaker uses but they do have a good selection of tool steels.

They do have a pretty good selection. They've also got a distribution center local to me. Trouble is they're minimum order is $100, and I wasn't able to get a price list from them for anything the last time I went in.

Ben, I'd be interested in getting the book. Could you give more details on getting one? Thanks

All I did was use the contact link on their web page. http://www.alro.com/DIVSteel/steel.htm I told them that I had heard about their book and was looking for a copy online. Turns out that there isnt an online copy, but the guy who emailed me back offered to send me a paper copy.

Here is a link to their contact page: http://www.alro.com/SECMisc/Contact.htm

If you click on the list of names/groups on the left you can email them.
