Ok I guess I'm new. But it seems there is a whole lot to learn about steel. Every manufacturer seems to have some steal that is "just amazing" and I dont't know who to beleive.
I was wondering if anyone knows of a reliable web resource or book that may explain what make each steel specail and what application they are best for. It would give a little history. :D

Knifemakers and manufacturers are your friends! They know a lot more about steel than most of us and they generally use appropriate steels, assuming that you pay a reasonable price for a knife to avoid the "pot steel" products. If you think it's interesting, then learn about steels, but you will probably find that the manufacturers and makers had it right all along.

Right on! Shop for the maker. If he/it has a good reputation over a number of years, it probably means good decisions on design, materials, and execution.

And by all means, try to at least get the knife in your hand before buying. If it feels strange/uncomfortable to you, it doesn't matter what I, or anyone else, thinks.

Keep in mind also that just because a steel preforms one way from one company that it will do the same from another.

example: Spyderco vs BM on S30V, spyderco keeps a rougher edge for a LONG time.

Is there a "not" missing here?
