Anyone else take extra pieces of steel and grind them randomly just to watch/feel the sparks and spray of metal? Or heat and quench? Or am I sick in the head? :)

I fully admit it might be the second. ;)

:) quite a few of my sport/collectables are stated with no real plan. just grab a piece of steel and start grinding. the design is reveled to me as i work. as far as liking to eat grinding dust i feel you may need to seek profession help here:D

I do a little bit, ..........it's kinda like working out on a punching bag: it's relaxing and it releases pent-up frustrations.
I keep it restricted to almost worn out belts, though, because it's not practical to use a new belt for this kind of crap.
:p

If you like sparks you may like to sweep up the metal dust under your belt sander and put them in a small jar. I sweep mine and when I am forging on the charcoal forge ( just when it is on dusk or after sunset) I pump up the air in the forge and sprinkle the metal dust and filing from a hight into the fire. The kids love it. I only do it to inpress them. I really don't dance around like a goose. Yes I do.

Just be carefull if you get a wind gust it can get intersting.Sparks every where

They say that a lot of Americans are lacking iron in their diet,
not you partner! That stuff is good for the red blood corps suckles.

i use almost all know ss steels, bg-42, s30v etc, by grinding you can develop a eye for carbon content, so you know if a unknown steel is hardenable.
