I was making a spring for an auto and cut the typical V in a pc of steel, inserted a screwdriver and spread them what I thought would be the correct amount and prceeded to HT. After quenching I noticed the V reverted to bandsaw blade width. Does this always happen? First time making a spring.

did you normalize prior to ht? if not that may be part of the problem...hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in

Make sure the materil is normalized before you start.
After bending you may want to stress relieve before heat treat. This will make a difference.

thanks Darrel. Should springs be cut with the Vee in them or can they be wedged apart and heat treated? For example..what would be normalizing temp be for 1095 or O-1? thanks very much.

for 1095 heat to 1575 then let cool in air, i have heard that some people cycle it through several times, and for o-1 1600 and same
