Im fully into Spring mode now, and I cannot express the pleasure I felt when Precious came around my Arizona abode! I wont try to match Mhawgs sterling review of The Precious as she performed against the venerable (and my current field knife) SH-E or the formidable FSH, which I recently added to my collection and have yet to fully appreciate. What I will do is give you a ladys unvarnished opinion of what may be Jerry Busses most perfect field blade.
Precious in my blooming plum tree:
Right out of the box, I was attracted. The weight, the size, the feel of Precious in my hand a few air cuts later well it was rapture! Unfortunately, all I could do for the first part of her visit was admire her the flu bug nailed me and I could not go out and chop. Now that Im back on my feet, we went outside to play. I cut a few early sumacs and now I understand!
Precious and the early sumacs:
It is all about the ergonomics! While my beloved SH-E puts considerable power into each chop by virtue of the handle-to-blade angle and weight, Precious with her thick spine and straight handle is just bliss in the hand. Even in my small hand! The palm swell is perfect, and I can choke up on the choil enough to do delicate tasks. I think this is very important in the field, when often I have only one knife to do it all.
I find her aesthetically pleasing a perfect symmetry. I find her dimensions just enough larger than my SH-E to make her more versatile before resorting to my BM-E. She remains agile enough in the hand for precision work. I think Im in love! The SHSH has definitely earned the right to be at the top of my Grail list, and I am duly impressed. Im going to miss Precious and my heartfelt thanks to Mulder for including me in this passaround!
