Hi folks,
I'm new to the forum and by way of intro, I've a quick question for you...

I have a Buck Protege FX folder and on the blade it says "450 U".
Can any of you tell me if that is a pretty good steel? I'm not real familiar with the different grades of steel or the rating system so I came to the experts!

Thanks! Seems like a good forum!

Welcome!

I'm not sure what "450 U" is, I see it on the picture on Buck's website. It's listed as 420HC. 450 U may be a forign designation (?).

Not to be a "steel snob" but 420 is some pretty low end stuff. It's okay, I guess. Most other "premium" steels are much better, even 440 if heat treated properly.

Edit: For future reference and light reading, you must be one sick bastid to read ALL of it. :D

Thanks for that and the welcome!

Yeah, it's the "U" that was throwing me off. I bought it in Canada, if that has any bearing on it...

So is the number designate (450) the hardness of the steel or what it's tempered to...or..what?
Also HC-is that High Carbon?

Thanks!

ARRrghh! Sorry Underaged! Didn't see the link until I posted.

Don't know if I'll read it all, but thanks anyway!
