Steel question.

Some of the old 110's had 440C steel. Some of the other old Bucks had 440C also, but I've only paid attention to the 110's. Buck has also offered ATS 34 in the past which is the Japanese copy of 154CM.

Any buck knives out for retail sale ( folding knives ) with a 154CM or a 440C steel blade? available currently?

I'm sure that there are no Buck's currently offered with 440C. Only the CSAR-T is listed this year as having a 154CM blade.

Also where can i get the buck catalog for this year i think i heard someone say something about march. do i have to join the bcci to get it? really want to check it out.

I have no idea where you would get the catalog unless you are a member of the BCCI.

The charts are cool, I'd forgotten about them. Too bad they don't cover the sandvick steel that he's asking about.

440C is quite a bit better for edge retention than the 440A shown on the chart. It (440C) has much more Carbon and can be taken to a higher HRC (Hardness Rockwell C). 440A=0.6-0.7 % Carbon. 440B=0.75-0.95% Carbon. 440C=up to 1.2% Carbon.

There is no such thing as "the best" steel for a knife blade. Various steels have attributes that make them better for some duties and not so good for others.

If you identify the uses for a knife, then a decision as to what steel is "best" for those functions can be more accurately determined. Some steels hold an edge better, some resist oxidation better, etc.

A brittle, but fine edge can be great for slicing, but if used as a chopper, the blade will chip.

What do you guys think of this steel called 12C27 Mod Sandvik stainless steel blade.

The OP's question in posts #1 & #2 were answered but then the thread got way off track and no one has answered the OP's question about the 12C27M. Anyone have any input other than the link I posted?

I have an Odyssey 181 in 12C27M from the web specials when they were available, and have used it a bit and sharpened it a few times now. It seems to have a slightly better edge retention than my Odysseys in 420hc, and sharpens up just as easily. It is a good blade steel, and performs pretty close to Bucks 420hc. It seems to form a burr when sharpening that is easily removed by stropping. This is just my personal observations on it.

PS, it takes a very keen edge!
