Im just starting to get into Spyderco knives and was checking out the Gayle Bradley as my next one but IM not sure about the CPM M-4 steel? Where does this steel rank against others like S30V or Elmax? Those are the steels Im use to with my ZT collection.......

I have the Gayle Bradley, and CPM M4 is considered a supersteel. It is a tool steel, not stainless but has excellent toughness and edge retention, better than S30v. Its up there with M390, Elmax, etc. Great knife, I love mine.

I like it more than my S30V. Holds an edge incredibly well. Yes it tends to show some patina with use but doesn't bother me any. Never used elmax so can't make that comparison.

thanks guys....i really need to learn about a few steels spyderco uses ive never dealt with on my Kershaws and ZTs

CPM M4 is probably my favorite, along with M390. Spyderco did an excellent job utilizing the properties of M4 in the Gayle Bradley with the high hollow grind and relatively thin behind the edge. For a work knife, it is really hard to go wrong with the GB.

I also have a few ZT/Kershaws. They are S30V, S35VN, and 154CM but no Elmax. I have a Gayle Bradley, and a BM Contego in M4 that out perform the previously mentioned steels. I really like S30V and the others, but M4 (to me) is on a different level.

ummm now I feel I need to try it out.....Im big fan of S30V and Elmax so i want to see how it compares

CPM-m4 is an awesome steel and will stay sharp an extremely long time, its also very tough!!!

Longest edge holding for a non stainless tougher steel. Somebody please correct me if I am wrong.

M4 blows elmax away... not sure if my 0561 is a lemon but edge retention sucks!! M4 has me pleased from the very first cut :) I get better edge retention with d2 or 154cm than I do elmax. I'd buy a lot more ZT knives if they weren't in elmax.
