steel question

i have a friend who makes knives and i was wondering if i took the barrel off my savage mark ii would it be good for making a knife or just be absolute crap

Knives are made to cut...guns are made to shoot.
It requires different metallurgy for each. Gun barrels are not knife steel. Most barrels are 4140 or similar steel...or stainless ( 416 and similar).

$50 or $100 would buy a lot of quality blade steel

Find someone who forges .Make a laminated blade with a high carbon center piece and barrel steel on each side.
