Anyone ever heard of 420 MA5M steel? And if so, what other steel can you compare it to?

Where did you get that name? 420 is AISI 420 steel, and MA5M is most likely Ugine & Alz Uginox MA5MV stainless steel. They are not really alike, MA5MV is closer to 440C than 420 or 420HC. Unfortunately, Uginox site is now defunct. For what it's worth, Uginox MA2 is what's closest to AISI 420.
MA5MV(W-Nr 1.4116 or DIN X50CrMoV15) is what gets used in most of the mainstream mid/high range western kitchen knives.

Gator,
Thanks for the input. I got the name for the steel I asked about from Walt Halucha, at Latama. I was asking about the blade steel on some F. Beltrame Swinguards I had seen and he told me the blade steel for those knives was 420 MA5M. I've used the zknives steel composition chart before. I'll check it out again...thanks again Gator. Later (Gator), birdave.

You're welcome. Drop me a not if you find something new about that steel. I still think it's not a correct name, but who knows.

Gator,
Yeah, I've never heard of that knife steel before either. If the carbon content on the knives I was interested in was up around the 440C range, I'd buy one of the knives. Even though the Swinguards I was looking at aren't EDC knives, I still want decent blade steel on a knife. Thanks again for your reply and if I do hear anything else about that steel, I'll let you know. birdave
