Is there a thread or a website you guys could point me to as sort of a primer on the different steels? I understand there to be 1095, S30V, ATS-34, AUS8? as some of the more common ones for knives.

Or maybe someone could explain the difference here?

To be clear, I'm not asking which steel is BETTER. I don't want to start that whole thing. I'm just asking what are the pros and cons for each steel. Is there a steel that is used more often than the others for knives? Are all the steels available in the US or are some imported?

muchas gracias, guys! That's exactly what I was looking for. Now, maybe I'll have a small clue as to what all you guys are talking about.
 
Shoot the list of good blade steels goes on and on. In the end, whatever the super steel is of the week is doesn't make it worth a damn if the heat treat isn't good.
