Hi everyone. My name is Ryan and currently I'm an aircraft electronics guy. I live in an appartment right now so space is tight but I've made lots of provisions in here because I'm bound and determined to be a custom knifemaker.

I was wondering if someone here can give me some good recomendations for where they get their steel. Cheap and great service is what I'm after.

I don't own a forge yet (but I plan to soon) so I need sheets. Everyone I call deals in big orders and won't give me a few pieces of the kind I want. I'd also like it to be annealed as soft as possible so I can get right to work.

While I'm at it can someone also give me a good recomendation for a good place I can ship to for heat treating and temper?

Thanks everyone.

Allright thanks that both sounds like good places to start. I've been using 11/16 combination wrenches for my projects so far but I'd really like something that's allready the right thickness.

Thanks guys.

Don't forget Kelly Cupples. He sells small quantities and can help you select the best steel for the particular knife you are making.

contact mace vitale. he is a maker and often posts on the forums. last i spoke to him he had a s**t load of steel he was selling.

Since this fellow is new, I doubt he has any idea of what most of you are talking about without links, which a few have provided. The search feature here does not work so it's pretty hard to look stuff up that way.

I would recommend reading at least one boook on the subject of knifemaking so you have some sort of foundation. I think it's hard to beat "How To Make Knives", by Barney and Loveless. It's available from www.amazon.com for a moderate price.

Good luck and remember, the stuff you're going to be using is for the most part toxic. Think of yourself and get a respirator, think of your family and the next renter and don't do it in the apartment.
