Steel Suppliers/tempering problems

I currently live in the northeastern part of TX & am wondering if anyone could point me to some "local" 1086.

Also, I'm used to working with 1050, and expect some problems with the blade cracking during the tempering process with the 1086. (I do mainly Japanese swords, and was told by others that it is likely) Anyone have some suggestions for a good quenching technique to use with the 1086?
I'd like to solve that problem before it IS a problem. Especially since I usually put out 1 sword every 6 months give or take a couple of hours...

Can't really help you with the local search for steel, but as far as the quenching/cracking problem, that should be easy to solve. 1086 or 1084 steels are both very common, and most outfits that deal with carbon/tool steels usually carry one or the other. There should be no problems with cracking if you use the proper quench media for the steel. In the case of 10xx steels a light oil, pre-heated to 130-160 F, does the job.

Thanks for all your help.
One more question.
Will using oil in stead of water alter the appearance of the hamon or hada?
If so, in what way?

The hamon achieved with oil will have a slightly softer line, due to oil being a less violent quench. It will still be very visible using the same polishing methods as if you where to water quench. Take Care.

Thanks for all your help. I can't think of any other questions off-hand, so thanks again for all the info.
