Anybody got any recommendations on a good steel supplier? Freindly and willing to supply very small amounts would be great. Also, any thoughts on a good stainless for fillet knives? (besides ATS-34, I consider it bad luck.) Respectfully, Levi Sinclair Farster

Any of the knife supply companys will sell steel in smaller pieces, K&G, Texas knife supply, Shefield...ect

A-2 is a great chioce for a thin flexable blade.

Try K&G Levi. These guys are top notch.

Why do you say ATS-34 is bad luck? Carbon steel having better cutting qualities aside, it's probably the best choice for a stainless filet knife 440c would be my second choice, but only is ATS-34 was unavailable. Its tough stuff.

Levi, here's another place. Tru Grit. it's a good place to get brand name belts at the good guy price too.
http://www.trugrit.com/
Pops is another place on the belts, but I don't know about the steel.
I can't get Pop's link to work,.................. again.

I must have caught K&G at the wrong time when ordering. When I ordered some ATS it took them 2 weeks before they called me to tell me that it was backordered, and it would take a few months to get in. :grumpy: I don't order from them, but the prices were good. Like I said, I probably caught them at a bad time, I might try again in the future.

if you are going for A2, I think www.toolanddie.com has some in several sizes. I haven't ordered from them, but I know a bunch of other guys have and like them. I took a look at the prices, and I'm gonna order my next batch of D2 from them...

I hope this helps, I'm a newbie with some experiance, so listen to these guys first! :D

Edit to add: I forgot to say that I use www.texasknife.com for my steel. Their prices are average, but you can just order a foot. In fact, I'm pretty sure that just about all of the suppliers allow orders of a foot minimum.

Toolanddie is a good site. I have been using http://www.flatground.com/ most of the time for the last three years for D2, A2 and O1. This is the online sales for Bohler/Uddeholm North America.

They supply either Uddeholm or Precision Marshall A2 and D2 and Starrett O1. I don't buy O1 very often, as I prefer A2 in that class of steel.

I like A2 for filet knives, too. If you are going to use them around salt water, though, you should get stainless.

I have been using thin A2 (1/16") for kitchen knives for a couple of years now and really like how they perform.

Several years ago I broke several folders at work (field tiling) all were ATS34 but none were very nice. Still. I couldnt even hurt the ugly Old Timer I ended buying. All the ATS34 blades broke a little back from the tip. So... I think I,ll make one 440c, which I have some experience with, and one A2, which I know nothing about. And I,ll ring some of the suppliers you all mentioned. Thanks for the feedback. Respectfully, Levi Sinclair Farster

What steels are available? Does he have a website? If not I'll call. Thanks

Email Kelly at the following address. Remove the "nospam"s

nospamoctihunter@charter.netnospam

Request a current listing of "steel in stock price list". He deals in various grades of carbon steels, 15N20, 52100, nickel sheet and powdered metals.

I just have to add my 2 cents Kelly Couples cut steel too size and sold me 4 lb of 2 different carbon content for damascus and posted to australia. I was very pleased with his help. The postage to australia is expensive but that is the post office. Local postage to you blokes is very cheap. considering the steel is cut to the size you want there is not much more you could ask for.

Wow, Kelly sounds like a good guy, if he has a website (there's a hint in there) I'll give him a shot. Meanwhile I buy all my O1 from Tool and Die . Haven't been able to beat the prices and quick shipping.

No Dave,
He doesn't have a website. At least not that I am aware of. His prices are good though and he is always willing to help. The last time I checked his price for 01 was

O-1 Precision Ground
5/16 x 1 1/2 x 15...( 2 lbs )....7.00 ea.

But check with him to make sure his price hasn't changed.

WOW!!! That's less than half what Tool and Die has it for... Guess I'll give him a call next time. Thanks folks.

I'll second Kelly Cupples for high carbon. You cannot beat his prices or service. As far as stainless, I don't use much and I've only gotten it through Admiral.
