Steel thickness questions...

I'm going to purchase some ats34 from admiral or wherever ( I seem to be hearing some negative things about admiral lately. My question is what do you guys consider the minimum thickness for a typical knife.

I have in mind two knives. One a boot knife that in all likelyhood will never see any use. Two, a modified wharncliffe for light duties.

I have some 3/16th 440c and I just don't like the thickness of it. Can I get away with 1/8? Or is 5/32 a better comprimise.

Thanks for your help, you guys are great, always a wealth of knowledge to my questions.

From a user/buyer standpoint, I've never had a problem thinking that 1/8 is "too thin."

1/8" isn't too thin at all for small blades. 7 or 8 inches overall, or less. After that I prefer thicker. Unless it's a kitchen or fillet knife or something.

Thanks guys,

I think I'll go ahead and get the 1/8, seems pretty cheap at Admiral. Do you guys prefer to buy from another supplier?

I like admiral, they have always been very quick with my orders, and last time they gave me some extra steel. I have heard about people being a charged a lot for shipping but it has never happened to me.

I have only purchased from texasknife.com, so cannot comment on the quality of the steel they supply relative to that from other suppliers. They are close to AZ, so that is a bonus if you are impatient like me. Their selection of steel is not as good as Admiral or Sheffield (sheffieldsupply.com) and their prices might be a little bit higher as well.

I continue to deal with them basically because it's convenient and I have had good service from them. If they didn't have what I needed, I'd try Sheffield next as I have heard good things about them and they do have an impressive selection of products at decent prices.

I have this bizarre notion that knives are for cutting. 1/8 can be pretty thick. Remember if it is to thin you can always weld it thicker but if its to thick there is noting you can do. I have dealt with both Admiral and TKS and am very happy with both. The Texans 01 is cheaper.

I just ordered some 440c from admiral for the 1st time (was using tks) but I will not order from them again. I orderd a piece that was supposed to be 18" long and was about all the wife would let me buy at 71.00 + shipping, then the bill came and it was 99.00 total which was probably about 12 dollars more than I expected. I called to see what was up and was told they shipped me 21 inches because i didnt specify 18 inches no more or no less. I told them that 18inches to me means no more or no less... anyway 30 mins later after asking about their web site which says "When we don't have an answer, we'll find one. Like Gateway Computer, we truly believe that People Rule .Admiral Steel is committed to total customer satisfaction" I said I am not a "satisfied customer". She said I should have read the terms and conditions more closely" (which i should have). I finally suggested a solution that she agreed to which was send the steel back at my expense and get a refund. I am still not happy but I would rather take a 15$ hit than to give them my business. Just one experience with one customer but thought you should know.
