Steel type?

Just curious, anyone know what type of steel the springs used for HI khuks are made up of? Is it 5160 or something else? The reason I'm asking is, if I ever had to have a tang welded, I would know which type of rod to use. The welder I have do stuff for me likes to know, so that he can try to match rod to steel. Says it makes for a better weld.

Most likely 5160, though there is a possibility that particular batch of springs was something different.

But 5160 is best bet, proably followed by 1095. And yes, if youre welding steel, matching the rod to the alloy does make for a better weld.

Quite a while back when I went down to Tulsa Auto Spring to get some 5160 I was told that spring steel was spring steel and that for springs it all hardens the same way.
I managed to get some 1060 and 1084 and I think a piece of 5160, it was quite a while back after all and I've slept several times since then.;)
It may all harden the same way for spring applications and maybe for knives as well.
Everyone says to heat the steel to non-magnetic, hold it there for a few seconds and then quench. You can bring it back to a straw or dark straw color for most knife applications and it works well for a knife.
The reason for the above is that I'm wondering if it's spring steel of any kind the same welding rod would be applicable?:confused:

Not sure I have so much knowledge;

Just usually good with the searches.
