Ralph Martindale Willenhall. produces hot rolled steel sections and bars using the most advanced technology. The rolling mill has been developed to achieve output of the highest possible quality.

The genuine "Crocodile" blade is made from hot rolled high quality British Steel by our own Mill. The strip is tapered in section to optimize the unique cutting characteristics with the weight of the tool.

Each face of the blade has three grooves which assist the blade's removal from sapwood. The grooves extend to the tang of the blade to form a mechanical lock with the handle. Our product is therefore lightweight and easy to use.

Does anyone know if they are using steel similar to 1095? I'm taking a wild guess only since " Crocodile brand "mentioned nothing but high carbon

I would say that it's at least the Euro equivalent of 1095 and related steels (1055, 1075) and they put a decent heat treatment on their stuff. They DO have the habit of not correcting for straightness after HT but they produce the strongest and most skillfully done tapering of any machete manufacturer bar none--including Imacasa/Condor who do a very fine job themselves! As a whole they rank as my second favorite machete maker after Imacasa/Condor.

It's mystery steel to me, but it keeps an edge. Martindales are sweet!

42Blades,
I think that's the plus point of hot-rolled steel?

It certainly makes the process easier! Otherwise you'd be doing a lot of stock removal.

Dear Jay,

Thank you for your email.

Regarding your enquiry about type of steel used for our products, the steel type that we use for our machetes is medium to high carbon steel ANSI 1060 – 1065 AISI standard or BS EN43D known as 0.60 – 0.65 C carbon steel is the world recognized steel specification for general purpose machetes, with good metallurgical composition for achieving a high hardness and excellent strength characteristics.

Cane knife steel is CS75 around the equivalent of ANSI 1075 - 1080 being a thinner lighter section designed to be with a more knife effect.

The ANSI 1095 (AISI) standard is high carbon steel which is more directed at conventional combat sword making and is very expensive to be competitive in the general agricultural machete market and is not used, it would not be economical.

Chillington and our parent company Ralph Martindale have been supplying millions of machetes per year for over 100 years utilizing the hot/cold rolled medium high carbon 0.60-0.65 C steel hardened and tempered to 45 – 50 HRC hardness Rockwell ‘C’ offering excellent spring steel qualities. Which produces an excellent machete and cane knife for the fundamental agricultural applications. Providing a good safe durable machete offering longevity.
We are pleased to provide you the best offer after we received your requirement and destination for delivery. We assure our high quality of products and looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Best regards,
