Assuming ideintical size... do different steels have different weights?
I mean if I take a Spyderco endura & change the steel from vg10 to ats34 will the weight change?? Does aus8 weigh the same as the same size blade in 440c??

Density changes a little bit. But i always found the weight difference to be negligible.

The majority of any steel is Iron atoms. In high carbon steels, like 1095, you may want to account for the weight of 9.5% carbon atoms. In stainless steels you may want to account for the 12% to 13% chromium.

I don't recall if these are percentages by weight or percentages by volume. ill let you look that up.

Again, don't expect a significant change in weight from the different steels.

You can calculate the weight difference fairly easily if using molar mass and the steels composition. All you'll need is the overall weight of the blade, a calculator and a periodic table. It will be negligible but certainly there.

154CM = 0.281 lbs./in3
440C = 0.276 lbs./in3

Just a few i looked up... you can see the weight does change a little.

It's kind of like the old question, "What;s heavier, a pound of feathers or a pound of lead?". In terms ov volume and mass, as CTS states, one would never be able to distinguish between a few hundreths of an ounce. However, there are plenty of people that complain and cry adamantly about a 5 ounce folder. Figure that one out. :D

It's not nearly as easy as you may think.

Austenite and Martinsite have different cubes, face-centered and body centered.

You are, however, correct in that the differences in weight in an actual knife blade would be negligible. In a block of pure Austenite and Martinsite, the difference would be much more palpable.

Sorry I forgot to include Face and body centered cubes. you would have to look those up for the steel. I just feel like we had to do alot of problems like this in chemistry...
