What is density and specific gravity of M390? I spent hours looking.
I was able to find it for M4.
“Density of PM M4 is 0.288 pounds per
cubic inch (7972 kilograms per cubic meter).
Its specific gravity is 7.97.”
My curiosity got piqued because I have 2 knives by the same manufacturer identical except for the steel But the M4 is noticeably heavier. Can close my eyes and tell you which one is in my hand by weight.
From what I can find they’re both supposed be 4oz without sheath.
Haven’t gotten anywhere to weigh them to see just what the weight difference is yet.

You should be able to calculate it rather quickly based on the weight of the ingredients and the percentages.

So how many cubic inches of steel might be found in the types of blades that we normally discuss in here?

Guesstimating the Bradford G3.5 I’m referring to may be a 1.125x1.125 cubic inch.
I’ll find out when I weigh it.

Maybe the grind is different or something. I cant imagine itnis enough of a weight difference to feel by hand.

Both saber grind.
Been looking at them again.
Wondering if one set of micarta scales has heavier weight due to color variance which is adding to the difference.
See if I can get them weighed somewhere to find out how much a difference there is.

Reactions: DMG
Tungsten is quite heavy , almost as gold
T1 HSS ........................8.67 g/cm3 , 18% Tungsten
A2 .................................7.75 g/cm3

20CV: 7616 kg/m3
M4: 7916 kg/m3

4% difference, and M4 has plenty (5.5%) of Tungsten.

Check the exact size of the blades.

I got them weighed.
The Bradford 3.5 in M390 is exactly 4oz.
The Bradford 3.5 in M4 is 4.8oz.
Don’t know if color of micarta scales adds weight, or not.
Weight is definitely noticeable in the hand.

iv'e never understood peoples obsession with small variations of knife weight. to me it has never mattered. what's the deal? am i missing something? it's never a detriment to my knife use.

I suppose if you're carrying your blade in a pair of light Summer shorts: it might make a small difference...
But I agree: it iS a curious thing...

I think it's an interesting question - more interesting than - say - if Baldwin is guilty of murder. :)

Plus, these are fixed blades, I wonder if the center of gravity is shifted which could make a difference in use.
