Hi Everyone,

New here. I apologize if this is the wrong forum to post in, hopefully someone can point me in the direction.

I have a steel will apostate 1113 tanto that I absolutely love. It's been beaten up, torn down and beaten up again and then I trusted someone to "do a pro sharpening job on it" as I've always struggled with the steady handedness of a good sharpening job.

Now the knife, is ruined. I can reprofile it but the belt grinder he used carved a 1/4" edge on one side and 1/8" on the opposite and took off nearly 3/16" of material from factory, as well as destroying the profile of the tanto.

The knife is no longer produced and I simply can't find a replacement, steel will was of no help.

My questions are:

Anyone have one for sale?
What about having a knife maker fabricate a new blade for me? Probably so $$ it wouldn't be smart.
Substitutes to replace this? Titanium frame lock, G10, flipper and 4"?

Again if this is the wrong forum please love or delete, I'll keep an eye out Been reading for a while, look forward to joining in more.

Thanks -James

I don't have an answer, but it pains me to think of what he did to the heat treat while he was grinding away...

Can't help you but im curious if this person you trusted to do the "pro sharpening" was just a friend or was like a service. Like on here how you can send your knife off to someone to get it sharpened.

Your best bet would be to find a similar knife that’s currently available. Maybe a Cold Steel SR-1 in a Tanto blade? Maybe even a ZT Emerson...or even a full Emerson?

Was just a friend. I'd used my lansky to polish up the edge and somewhere along the way it got dull enough that a fresh edge was necessary.

In conversation he was very confident he could oblige and I trusted the fact that he's pretty astute with a lot of things...welder fabricator, overall a smart guy. This, however isn't one of his strong points. I wish he would have just realized his error early on and stopped in his tracks rather than try and finish.

No hard feelings as it ass a favor done and not the most expensive knife out there ...

The Cold Steel looks like a great knife, just not a fan of the triad kickback style. I have a Finn Wolf and it's a great little knife, just not what I prefer.

I really like some of the ZT stuff. I want a sinkevich 0452CF as well but was hoping to at least leave the apostate in a reasonably good usable condition.

If you decide to go this route, the good news is that this space is populated with some solid options.

Zero Tolerance makes several Ti frame locks in this size range, all for a bit more than the Apostate (but not a huge jump). I own/have owned the 0452, 0462, and 0308 (3.75", but still a big knife), all great. The 0308 is around the Apostate's price point on the secondary market and is a big, beefy knife.

The Kizer Toro might be worth a look. I've owned plenty of Kizers (though not that one), and they've all been excellent.

If you're willing to shave off 0.25", a 3.75" blade opens up even more options.

And yeah.

Good call, I could in fact go for a smaller Apostate as well with that logic which honestly I hadn't thought of.
