There's been a lot of discussion regarding fire starters on this and other forums. We've had vasilene soaked cotton balls, commercial tinder, fuzz sticks, etc. Steel wool is often mentioned and I've used it many times for the past 40 years with flint and steel and even with batteries to generate a source for a flame. The other day I was cleaning my shop table where I had finished some wood-working using steel wool, when I accidently moved a piece to a place where my battery charger for my drill was laying (stupidly still plugged in)....POOF!, almost half the steel-wool pad went up in one quick spark. Luckily a concrete floor and shoes put out the problem. (it did, by the way melt to the bottom of my rubber sole to attest to it's heat.) Just a momentary lapse in safety and another reminder of the usefullness of steel wool to catch and hold a spark.
