Steel?

Hi Guys,

I'm in the process of creating a new fixed blade knife. Oddly enough,

my design looks incredibly similar to a Ranger RD-4. As usual, I have a

kicker thrown in there. My question is in two parts.

1. Which steel should I use?

The blade needs to be durable enough to handle lots of battoning.

Also, its important that I can put a really sharp edge on it for slicing.

2. Can anyone recommend any steel providers?

Preferrably a provider that you've some kind of experience with.

Reasonable prices, doesn't have to be cheapest around.

I'm anxious to get started so I'd appreciate any and all posts.

Thanks in advance,

Mikey AKA Slick

You have not indicated what equipment you have or your knife making experience which are big variables in getting a good recommendation. So, I am going to go with a recommendation for a novice with a hacksaw, drill, hand files and sandpaper... Try 420 stainless or 440A stainless. Both are soft enough to not discourage you in getting a knife made; sharpen very easily and are tough. Tough and holding an edge are two different aspects of any steel. You may want to use an appropraite knife blank to cut down a lot on the hacksaw work!
