HandAmerican was mentioned in a recent post. I have been checking out their web site. They have longer steel rods (11 inches and up), but the shorter rods they have (6"), wwhich would be more suitable for field carry, are called burnishing rods.

What is the difference between steeling and burnishing?

True steeling is burnishing. The abrasive rods they have must be what they are calling honing rods.

Generally burning a tool is using a steel with enough force that you hook the edge strongly to one side, it is done on wood scrapers. Using a steel on a knife the goal is to get the edge aligned, it is done really light.
