There have been some interesting theories presented here today about steels--one just today was a claim based on ONE knife chipping (with a picture, even) that there must be something wrong with 440C.

Another, strangely enough, based on ONE knife chipping, claiming that there must be something wrong with 425MOD.

This was sort of a hit and run episode, allowing no opportunity to respond.

So, in the interest of fairness to these steels, I decided to check it out......

Search words: 425MOD Chip.

After several pages, no specific complaints or forum discussions of the problem of 425MOD chipping (although there were a couple references to S30V chipping).

Search words: 440C Chip.

https://www.google.com/search?q=440...s=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Again, after several pages, no specific complaints or forum discussions on 440C chipping (although, AGAIN, there were a couple comparisons to S30V chipping).

Search words: BG-42 Chip.

Same result as above.

Search words: 420HC Chip.

Same result as above.

Search words: S30V Chip.

My sweet Lord!!! What a difference! More complaints of S30V chipping than you want to count. Hundreds, probably thousands if you took the time to read all the hits......and over a number of years.

Lots of guys saying the same thing......"My S30V knife is chipping......Why? What's wrong?"

(One from a guy they called "Goose" on this very Buck forum.)

So many threads from many forums: Here's some fun stuff.....calling S30V "The Steel of the Devil."

I said it was the steel of the devil. Even at highly refines state it micro chips. The steel is hyped and really not that good. Sal Glassner said: S35VN is what s30v should have been if they only designed it for knives. s30v chips easily, doesn't hold a refined edge, is expensive and overhyped. that's the problem.

"Steel of the Devil"......I got a kick out of that one.

So I post this because some might actually want to research it for themselves on a little wider spectrum--involving hundreds or thousands of experiences--and to make this point.

The issue of whether or not a steel is good has wider horizons than one experience with your own knife.

Caveat: I am sure that any bad experience with S30V has nothing to do with the devil.
