Recently, Doug at Cameraland NY offered me an opportunity to try a pair of Steiner 8X42 Predator Xtreme Binoculars.
After using them for a week, I wanted to share some thoughts about them.

First off, these binoculars are very bright and clear. The large objective lens and the roof prism design really let in the light. Observations in low light, both at dawn and dusk, showed excellent performance. Objectives were clear, with no focus issues.

The pair I tested weighed 27 ounces with the strap. This is a little heavy, but the strap was comfortable, and any weight penalty was compensated for by the performance.

I was able to compare these 8X Predators to my older pair of 12x40 porro prism Predators, and a pair of 10 x 42 Pentax DCF binoculars. I compared the three pairs of binoculars while out on the boat, at the gun range, and in the woods. Light conditions ranged from very bright full sun, to starlight.
I felt the 8x42 Steiners were the better of the three, based on clarity of image, performance in low light, ease of use, and over all performance.

Boy did I hate to box them up and send them back :o
