I finally drop off a whale's tooth knife today to the ivory dealer . Now he just got in from Alaska on Saturday and he brought back ivory and bones.
I got this bone off of him that the Eskimo in Alaska told him that it was seacow. What do you guys think??? I cut a piece off the end and polish it.
He had part of a runner off a Eskimo's sled and it is walrus ivory and weighted 3 pounds. Man I would of loved to have bought that.  :D

The Stellar or Stellar's Seacow has been extinct since somewhere around the mid-1700's. You can use the bone for handles, but it's very porous. Stabilization is good idea. Here's one of my El Caminos I did a while back with Stellar Seacow and mother-of-pearl.

Hello George: I have some Stellar Sea Cow..but it is considerably lighter in color than yours. Kinda dark Khaki colored. It machines nicely. The pcs I have are about the diameter of your fore arm and aboput 24" long. Nice stuff. How did you buff your piece?

IG, that looks pretty cool, nice coloring. Did you put it in the juice?

Terry, he was tell me the history that the Russian fishermen ate most of them.
I plan on stabilizing it and have a small piece in the soup (B72) with blue pigment.
John I just took it down to 600 grit and buffed with white compound. ;)
PS: Nice knife Terry

IG: That stuff is nice. This ivory dealer near you?

Terry: I love that knife, man!

Higgy, 15 minute ride. He had some Mammoth too. He also makes alternative ivory. He gave me pieces of wood that came from the USS Constitution quarter size pieces that they sent him. He glues the plastic ivory on the wood and laser scrimed with the Constitution. He is also has the sheet copper from the bottom of it.

IG, Mine is just alittle darker than yours. I just sealed the outside of mine a couple times with super glue quickset epoxy. When I epoxied it to the knife I just kept filling it back up the epoxy untill it would accept no more. Must have taken at least 15 minutes.

that darker stuff like that, looks like some Mammoth leg bone I got from Chuck leak up there in AK
polishes up nice but it's britle is that Brittle too?

Dan, I really can't say it was brittle although in its natural state I don't think it would hold up very long. I use a 4 to 1 epoxy I get at Tap Plastics that is made by them. Its like maple sirrup and it was totally absorbed into the bone. I use the smallest Dixie cups to do my mixing in and it took almost a full one by the time it would take no more.

I have some stellar seacow rib bone that's solid and heavy and big enough for a set of large pistol grips. I bought it from Rick Fields a long time ago. Brown, tan, cream. Good looking stuff. No, it's not for sale.

Every time I see this subject line I think of (and start playing in my head) that Dead song, "Stella Blue."

Thanks IG! :D

To get this back on track, I bought a nice chunk of Seacow bone at the Blade show a couple years ago. Someday it's going to be the handle of one big bad bowie... And it'll be a handful too. I'm always taking that thing out to play with, trying to figure out a knife for it. ;)
