Okay, one of my friends from my old computer geeking days runs a machine shop out of his house, and we were talking about things he can make for specific markets.

For those of us with low tech grinders using step pulleys, I mentioned to him that the 4 step cones are invariably not workable for an extended speed range.

I suggested a starting point of a motor side set of 4 2 inch pulleys all turned together in one piece, with the varying sizes on the other cone, something like 2.5, 3, 3.5, and 4 inches.

Just out of curiosity, given both 8 and 10 inch contact wheels, what sizes would yall suggest or find more useful?

I'm not sure about the sizes, but a set designed around a 3450rpm motor would be nice, as trying to get proper operating speeds for this fast of motor can sometimes only limit you to just a couple pullies on a standard 4 step. I know this type of motor is pretty easy to find and many people I have noticed try to start with one and run too fast of a belt speed. I know i would be interested in a set.

Cool topic, Christof,

I have a 4-step pulley (2-3-4-5) on both motor (1725 rpm) and drive (6"). I can't remember the exact speeds, something like 1000, 2000, 3800, 6700 belt speed (feet) per minute. I rarely max it out in 4th gear, but I would like slower speed for some work. I was thinking about getting a 4" drive, and swapping it out when I need a low end. Does anyone have a calculator that determines belt speed and can handle Motor RPM, motor pulley dia., drive pulley dia., and drive wheel size?
