Hi gents-

I picked up a RAT7 not to long ago, and have really enjoyed it. My stepbrother was going on an overnight and needed something, so I let him borrow it for the night. Oops...

I got it back and he had apparently tried to sharpen it with a really course file. There are still little grooves from the file teeth on the edge! I tried just smoothing them out with a stone or ceramic file and no luck. After that, I laid some course sandpaper on a hardback book and that helped a little bit, but it would be a lot of work to take off the marks.

So right now I think it's more dull than ever, still with those little teeth marks, and I'm super pissed.

Anybody have a good thought on what to do with it?

Ok, spent some time with a fine diamond file and a couple of pieces of wetdry 320 and 600 grit sandpaper. It's starting to look a good bit better now, or at least the ridges are pretty much gone. Still some work to do...

Must've used a smooth bastard file, they'll take off material, but leave a crappy finish, or he just doesn't know how to file.

I'd use a coarse diamond stone until the ridges were gone, and had a uniform edge. Then move to a medium or fine until it was nice and sharp, then honed it from there.

I'm assuming that plunging it into his heart isn't an option.... :D

I say that with nothing but humor and trying to make you feel better.

It sounds like you're on the way.

How much material has ended up being removed? Sounds like they are pretty severe.

Good luck and trust your skills. It sounds like you have a handle on it.

You could fix it in 5 minutes with a belt sander. If you know somebody who has one and knows how to use it, that would be an easy job.

Thanks, I think I've gotten it straightened out with some handtools and sandpaper. I've got a beltsander but I don't like to use it on finished blades if I can help it.

Borrow his car and ram a tree. When he complains about the dent in the fender, tell him you were just following his example.

A haiku for you:

Moras are for lending.
Keep nice things to yourself please.
Saves the agony.

How old is he?

Why would he HAVE to sharpen the blade on an overnighter?
I sharpen my knives after use in the field but I dont think he had to sharpen it, maybe he was just trying to be cool for the people that went on the trip with him.

I have made this mistake more than once. Hey can I use you knife real quick? Me, sure.

then they hand you back a brand new knife missing most of the finish, and looking like they chopped nails (one lady I worked with used my knife to cut open a bunch of silicone carbide sand blasting grit......which I did all the time, I simply cut the top off the bag, not slashed the middle out where all the grit messes up the blade).

or oops, I broke the tip off your knife, I guess it was not strong enough to un screw that rusty flat head screw.
