I was asked to do an article or two in the OKCA News Letter and I thought I'd do one on making tomahawks. Thought this might be of some interest to some of you. The only thing I cheat on is the slot for the eye, everything else is done with hand held hammers. The picture is pretty self explanitory but if there's questions let me know........

Thanks Raymond.
I have often wondered how you do the eye on axes.
The picture tells me alot.
Were can i read more about it?

Cheers

BC, I've got this post over at shop talk and its alittle more in depth. I don't believe the article will be out for a few months yet.....

how do you slot them? on a mill or just drill then file it up? I've been wanting to make one piece axes for a while instead of forge welding.

Cheers, great picture.

Robert, Sorry I didn't get back sooner. I had forgotten about this post. The way I do the slot is to drill a serries of holes and then use a carbide burr to clean up the slot. I do all that with my drillpress and a cross vice.

Thanks alot Ray :)

sounds easy enough and I have access to mills at work, this thread has been most informative  especially for an upcoming smith :D

Raymond, thanks for the pics, they are very informative. I was wondering, where/how did you acquire/make the drift for opening up the eye? Is it designed to fit the "standard" (if there is such a thing) 1 degree eye handles that are solde at Track Of the Wolf and DGI, or is it your own profile?

Best regards

Clinton
