SteriPen - Off Topic

I've had some experience with it, but not enough to know if it really works that well.

I'm taking a new Katadyn mini Hiker down on this next trip to see how it does. I still like the MIOX for extended trips.

You know, I always wondered. . . if you properly purify the water in your container and drink from it, how do you protect yourself from "bad" water that is on the outside of your container that was not purified. I get the sense with the SteriPen that if you purify the water in your container properly, but if you have not purified the water on the outside of the container (which is clinging to the outside and thus not purified), you could get sick because you drank the "bad" water on the outside of the container along with the purified water on the inside.

Maybe I'm just paranoid.

I would imagine that the amount on the outside which you might consume would so small that it would have not affect. You could always wipe the outside of the container off for extra protection.

Not exactly true. All it takes is a very very small amount of contaminated water to cause a problem. With chemical purification it always a good idea to let some of the treated water splash around on the outside of the container to help knock down any problems. Not sure how you would do this with the light pen though.

I'd say you'd be best off poring the water from one container "the dirty one" into another "the clean one" to keep from getting any of the contaminated water on the outside of the clean container....hope that makes sense.

You can buy a bottle top filter either separate or with the Steripen that keeps the top of your bottle dry and clean.

It’s always looked like a cool idea, but it seems that a good filter or chemical purification would be more effective. Something like calcium hypochlorite, etc. Something to look into further I guess.
