The wife and I came across a small collection of these at an antique mall some time ago, and she real liked them. I'm thinking on getting her one for Christmas, but I'm unfamiliar with which brands are quality, or if it really matters?

I'd like to find one with a seed/nut pick as well as a blade, there are a few on the Bay but I was wondering if there is a better place to go, or if there is anyone here who is knowledgeable about any specifics to keep an eye on/out for?

Also, near as I can determine there aren't any companies currently offering anything like these, is that correct?

For reference, I'm talking about ones similar to this:

My wife has a small collection of these. Just be sure they are marked with either English hallmarks or sterling if American. There are
also some lovely pearl handled fruit knives.

Only really worth buying if they are mint in my opinion. The solid silver blades are too soft to use for much. On the Sheffield ones you can easily work out the maker and year of production from the silver hallmarks. Cowlishaw is a good maker, but go on the individual knife and the condition. Expensive hobby to be getting started on ;)

I haven't handled a great many fruit knives but the ones I've handled with picks have been mainly plated, not sterling.
Make sure all the blades including a pick is hallmarked.

Best regards

Robin

I could buy silver fruit knives all day long here in England, but I'd be sleeping on the streets before Christmas!

Haha, thanks for the replies, I guess I was imagining the scales to be sterling, and the blade/pick to be steel... I'm also not sure I want to start collecting them, but I'll leave that up to my wife...

David, it might just be the size of your photo or my old eyes. I'd thought that that was a MOP-handled fruit knife, but I think it's actually got sterling silver covers hasn't it? In which case, ignore my previous comments! :o :D ;)

Edit - I had thought you were talking about this sort of thing.

Similar shape and my photo is small, but my wife really liked the silver scales, she already has a stainless SAK so I guess that shows her taste...

That’s great, R Rich S !
I’m glad you only waited 5.5 years to show us. 6 years would have passed the statute of limitations.

I’ve always been intrigued by these silver fruit knives, but only have one in my collection. I appreciate seeing this set!

Actually she just found the box. Wife had them stuck away under some of her unmentionables.
