OK, I made up the term 'evolved damascus' but whatever it's called, Steve Schwarzer is leading the way (again!) toward more complex and challenging damascus steel patterns.
Using new skills and technology beyond my ability to understand, much less explain, Steve produced this beautiful "Star" folder - the first one of its kind to leave his shop. I'll try and post a macro shot of the 'star' in the bolster later, but for now I hope folks will enjoy this image. What Steve is doing with damascus truly represents "the dawn of a new day."
I understand he will have a very nice automatic at BLADE in Atlanta featuring this 'star' damascus pattern.

Actually the star itself is not 'canned' or 'powdered' - something completely different that results in much improved 'resolution' - less distortion. Unfortunately I seemed to have misplaced the explaination Steve sent to me but I'll keep looking. You can read about Steve Schwarzer's contributions to the world of damascus patterns in David Darom's book Art and Design in Modern Custom Folding Knives. Here's a closer look:

That's a beautiful folder Buddy. I hope you are able to dig up Steve's explanation of the process - I'd be interested to find out more.

Cheers,

Roger

Few seem to have the utter control of their damascus as Steve :D.

Have a safe trip Buddy! See ya in a few days.

You have a safe trip too, Gus - look forward to seein' you there. How about I tag along with you some at the show and help you spend your money?! :D

Here's another take on this knife - more in keeping with the 'star' theme. Think I like this one better. (edited to add: except I now see that the bark on the ivory handle is way dark!)

No problem Buddy I would value your thoughts and advice, I still think you got one of the best if not the best deal at Blade last year with that collaboration dagger in the A.B.S. auction! You have a great eye for quality!

I feel like the guy who sang the song, "I can't drive 55"! I just can't stop messin' around with this image!
