As some of you know one of my main focus points in my collection is Goblin folders. There are just a few makers that are willing (and able) to make this type of knives. One of them is Steve Schwarzer. When I approached him a year or so ago with the question if he was willing to make me a Goblin he was at first a bit reluctant. He told me it was years ago that he made one. After a day or two I heard back from him and he told me that he was enthousiastic to make me one.

Time passed and somewhere by the end of October Steve informed me that he started work on the knife. At that time I contacted Coop if he had the time to capture the little critter with his camera. Last week or so I received a snapshot from Steve with the message that the Goblin was ready and on its way to Coop.

Well Coop did his usual magic and here he is in all its glory. Steve made a knife with great character and he has put lots of little interesting details in the knife. The Goblin face on the "flipper tab" being my favorite.

The little beast is in the mail now and I hope to welcome him in his new home by Monday.

Very nice. From what I've seen you have a wonderfull collection of very eccentric knives. I'd love to come and see them some day if I'm in the neighbourhood. I'm by no stretch of the imagination a collector with a budget that is needed for knives like that but I do appreciate the workmanship and looks of them.

I'm not a huge fan of Goblin folders however always appreciate the enormous effort and skill that goes into creating them.

I particularly like how Steve created the bolster on this piece from the stag.
Actually his manipulation of the stag in general from bolster to handle to craved pommel is quite amazing.

This is one of the nicest of the Goblin style folders I have seen. I appreciate how it's readily recognizable as a knife at a glance. Some are too "out there" for my taste.

Congrats Marcell.

Whilst not everyones cup of tea, you cannot help but be impressed by the workmanship that goes into these .... they are wonderful example of a knife as a Object d'art, they are certainly worthy of extended viewing. The face in the flip lever is a wonderful touch.

Cheers

Stephen

I ALSO don't care for Goblin knives, but CERTAINLY can appreciate the fine craftsmanship it takes to create one.

That is VERY cool Marcel....and the stand is too!

Congrats!

Marcel, I think it's great when anyone is stoked by a new addition to their collection. Each of us, I am sure, has come to appreciate something that is "way of there" in others' collections. I remember a time when I had a distaste for art daggers. HUH??

Congratulations on this new acquisition!

I very much like gobins, and this one is really nice! Congrats Marcel, and as usual, terrific photos Coop:thumbup:

These knives always draw mixed reviews. ;)

One thing I am dead certain: In one thousand years, when this knife (hopefully) is admired again, the stewards will still be scratching their heads: "What were they thinking?"  :D

And that's the inexplainable draw to them, for those who accept them. It doesn't fit in our traditional sense of style and utility.

This particular knife is massive and solid. The coloring is rich and, as Kevin has pointed out, the integral bolster is a very unique touch. There is buried treasure everywhere.

I commend you, Marcel, for your visions. I also commend Steve Schwarzer for his. :)

I always admire the craftsmanship that goes into Goblin folders. On this piece, I am particularly impressed with the integral stag bolsters.

Thanks guys for all the comments.

It is as Coop said these Goblins have an inexplainable draw to me. I love the fact that they all have their own character and variations are (almost) limitless.

They also appeal to me on another level. From childhood on I have been fascinated with the worlds of legend, scifi and mystery. Tolkien is my all time favorite writer, along with Frank Herbert, Clive Barker and Stephen King to name a few.
To me these Goblins are like a physical representation of the imaginary worlds I got acqainted with and found interesting earlier on in my life.

Some collect figurines of LOTR, go to SciFi conventions or play World of Warcraft for the rest of their lives;)......no not me I collect Goblins:D

Marcel,

I for sure understand where you are coming from. I think we both know each other's knive collections and you golbin's are top notch. Again like some I may not collect them but surely appreciate the workmanship that they require. No amatuers need apply here. As with your other's this is a beauty and using the stag on the bolsters just adds to the complexity of the piece as a whole.

Congratulations, I know you are proud of it and deservedly so.

Marcel,

The goblins always leave me amazed at the artistry and variety among the makers who are drawn to our corner of the arts/crafts world. Steve's done a great one here. Congrats.

Thanks guys. Today the mailman delivered a package. After unwrapping there appeared my new Goblin. Well I have to tell you. Although Coop's pictures are the best, this knife is even better in real life. All the details, filework in and out, the liners, the face, you name it it's all done very very well. You can really tell a Mastersmith was at work here.

What is difficult to show in a picture without direct comparison is the size of a knife. Well this Goblin is really BIG, just shy of 10 inches long. Here is a lousy pic I just took with a Bradshaw and Kious folder in the same picture for comparison. Every time I look at this pic it brings a big smile to my face.
:D:D:cool:
