I have been thinking about picking up a Steyr M-A1 in 9mm. Does anyone have any experience with this pistol? I have searched a few forums and found no well written reviews or anything else on it. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hey Nemo :) try this forum out. http://www.steyrclub.com/index.php lots of info. I own a steyr M40. It's a great gun, shoots well. However, parts are VERY hard to find. I called Steyr USA several months ago and asked if I could get a recoil spring (after a subsequent email and no reply) and the rep on the otherside (I wont mention his name) said "Sure, no problem". He took my info and everything. Said the part was free. To this day I have yet to receive it. :(

Personally, if I were you, I'd get a glock 19. Save yourself the headace. At least until Steyr can get more parts and better customer service.

my bud has one, in 9MM, w/the trapazoidal sights (which i kinda like), a good reliable fairly accurate pistol, if ya get a good deal i say go for it, if its $400/up i would get a glock 19 myself, the glock is easier to get good spare mags for (my bud got 2 at the gunshow which werent made by steyr and are not any good) and imho is a better gun, not that the steyr is bad. also holsters are kinda hard to come by on the steyr while they are a dime a dozen for glocks. a springfield armory XD is also good and better than the steyr imho, and is priced right also.

I got my holster from blade tech, but trust me, it was a bitch and a half trying to find someone that made one. the sights are nice, but you do have to get used to them at first.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I got to hold one and I liked the ergonomics but I didn't have a chance to shoot it. I sent an e-mail on Thursday to Steyr USA regarding what sort of warranty they offer with their guns, but haven't heard anything yet. All in all, I think I'm going to go with another gun. I came really close to picking up a XD45acp, but I just can't get over how damn ugly it is! :D So, I will do a little more research into what I am going to get. I might say screw it and pick up a Beretta 90two and as I'm looking for a small carbine, I can pick up a Beretta Storm and trade out the clips, but research first.

Thanks again!

Wow, I like the looks of steyr's weapons. I have the Steyr GB and a Pre Ban Steyr Aug A1..Would love to get an A3. Looks too cool.

Too bad Bush wasn't a pro gunner. With a Republican House and Senate he could have wiped out the importation ban his dad signed on.

The steyr is a very ergonomic gun. It indexes well. Recoil is VERY managable because the bore axis sits real low to the hand. the sights get some getting used to, but they do their job well once you do get used to them. All and all, it's a fairly good gun.

HOWEVER

poor customer service. no parts available. limited holster selection. hi cap mags are hard(er) to find than say, Glock. Unless you are truely inlove with it, I suggest you pass it up.

On a sidebar, those S&W M&P's are lookin pretty nice. their grip angle is fairly simular to the steyr if that's something you are interested in. Plus you can change out the backstrap to fit your hand.
just a thought.

I'm with Steyr40user above. No one's saying it's a bad gun and to the contrary it has solid believers in it's design. It's just that the parts accesibility/customer support IS the only thing stopping it from being more competitive than that other polymer gun that rhymes with "clock". Being a martial artist, I fell for its ergos too but am really trying to decide if I should get one one someday because of this sticky issue.

I received an e-mail from Jack Riddle of Steyr USA and he let me know that while their pistols have a 1 year warranty, they are very flexible after the fact.
