i've heard about stick fighting, is this something people compete in as a sports or is it also valuable as a self-defense? i guess people will say "lot's of times you can grab anything and use a stick" but i really don't see that happen.. in a city i don't go around with a stick on daily bases... but does learning stick fighting also teach ASP baton use? if so, i might see the use for it

Hello,
When learning stick work,it is principle of using an angle of attack, and countering it with a particular weapon. If you understand this fact, it becomes easier to transition between ddifferent weapons or empty hand skills. If you art does not translate well, you may want to expand your search for a new skill to learn, especially if you are serious about self protection skills. I do carry a collapsable baton, and the skills that I have learned in Kali are applicable to the ASP.
I hope this helps

The skills and principles of the stick do apply to everyday items and definitely to an ASP. You just need to learn how to apply them to other items.

thanks! i guess i won't be part of "the dog brothers" any time soon, but learning a little stickfighting might be a good thing

I have been in about 80 full contact stick fighting matches and I tell you it's a real eye opener. You find out how much you don't know. Stick Fighting teaches you about timing, distance, pain tolerance, etc. Check out our web site at http://www.fullcontacthi.com if you want to learn more.

if you are looking for philippine martial arts, a good way to see if this person is just going to teach you to swing a stick, or really teach you to kick some ass is to ask a easy question: can you show me how to attack somebody? most of the bulls#*t martial artist will only ask you to "strike me here" and then give you an answer. that is not learning to fight that is "self defense". most of the people who specialise in these "stick defenses" do not know how to fight, and cannot show to you HOW. find someone who knows how to ATTACK. that is practical application for the street. the guy who you will use you stick against on the street is probably not going to have a stick.

if you are concerned about will you have a stick, that is only a question you can answer. i carry the weapon i choose to carry that day so i can use it "just in case". if you are confident you can use the weapon, then carry it! i have seen these folding sticks with a spring in it, they are very good and will do more damage than a rattan, and if you know how to properly use it, you can kill somebody if you have to (dont go around killing people tho).

good luck!

While I would agree about the BS martial artist that can only perform a technique against a given attack, I have to disagree with you on the principals of attack.

For a man to attack he must first become unbalanced, your attack allows me to counter on balance. While however I will not let you move forward to find balance, thus martial arts is in essence always self defense if practiced corectly. You act, I react. If I instigate the movement I am unbalanced and you have the advantage.

Kuntawman, I think Taomonkey is describing defense against a committed attack and how he would off balance the attacker.

Aside from the incredible sense of distance and timing that a full contact stickfighitng match can teach you, I've found that sometimes I can look at this 6'2" Samoan guy and think to myself, "Nah, his fist couldn't possibly hit me as hard as Stuart tries(does)

." Plus, I'm pretty sure anyone who has done this type of sparring can attest that they could use almost any weapon with the same principles and concepts. The full contact sparring brings out the basics of the principles and concepts to the fullest extent.
