Just got a copy of 'The Cane as a Weapon'... originally from 1912...
I have 3 walking sticks, all 3 from Cold Steel:
African Walking Stick, City Stick and WalkaboutXL...
I carry one (I alternate) when wifey and I go on our exercise walk each evening...
New to this art... want to learn...
Have 'Tae Kwon Do' background, and 'Street Fighting' learned the hard way...
I am physically fit, average size/build...

I would ask you to become a part of this. It has the most FMA resources imaginable. People that know the history, many who are Guros and GM's and always willing to share information when asked. Just tell people what you want and usually people are able to help you out. Training gear, training partners, history and etc

take care

aj,
I will give that a try...
Just to let you know more, I have been 'into' Korean Karate (Tae Kwon Do) since my Dad enrolled my brother and I as teenagers back in the 1970's... After that, I was in a lifestyle that was a poor choice (drugs, drug dealer friends, etc.)... and was forced to use Karate numerous times, along with adapting 'Street Fighting' techniques that I sort of added to it all... I have a firearms background, thanks to Dad and the drug dealing past I had, and was bright enough to design and make crude 'guns' at age 19-20... Got fully into firearms starting at age 21, have owned 50+ firearms since. Got very heavily into wound ballistics in the 1980's, the foremost authorities of this field are personal friends of mine (IWBA member, writer, author and ammunition tester). Most recent venture before walking sticks was tomahawks. Am knowledgeable in 'less-than-lethal' weapons like: Mace, Pepper Spray and the newer Pepper Gel... If it will help me defend myself/others... I want to learn.

The walkabout XL is one stout piece, I have the first one. I had a chance to handle the xl and I must say that I like it.:D

stonyman...
It reminds me a little bit of the stick used by 'Buford Pusser' in 'Walking Tall'...

aj1985...
Thanks again for more info to look up... appreciate it...

Cold Steel's "Stun, Stagger, Stop" DVD should be a nice intro to the kind of walking stick that you're using:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2XL_iQgJnc

In addition, I'd consider the following:

Dog Brothers' material re. staff and two-handed stick
Pekiti Tirsia Sibat and Walking Stick Material (Rick Faye has a DVD out in this regard)
Western bayonet and riot stick drill
John Jacobo's "Dos Manos" DVD
Tapado Material (various sources)

These are no substitution for instruction, of course, but should give you a good outline of what you can do with a two-handed stick.

Best,

Steve
