Stick tang Knives?

Marbles comes to mind. Closest I can find to the superb old Blackjack Classics. Come scary sharp out of the box too!

Boriqua,
I do stick tangs on some of my hunters. Usually I stay away from them but nice round stag pieces will get me going on them from time to time. I also save all my exotic and stabilized wood to add in front of the stag.
One of the first knives I ever made, was in 8th grade in my dads shop class! He had us make stick tang knives out of 01 with stacked leather handles, brass guards and aluminum butt caps! That was an experiece I will never forget

Hello,

I also use the "STICK TANG" construction on my " RECON PATROL" and my " COMBAT PATROL
BOWIE" models,,,i like to think of mine as
almost a Hidden "FULL-TANG" construction, more so than the term STICK TANG.

The Reason i say this is for example my COMBAT PATROL BOWIE model`s internal tang Structure is Close to 1 inch Wide, even on the smallest model.

This way i can Run my Zone hardening And Cut the Tang Juncture so it presents itself inside the handle Zone hardened also.

This Produces a Superior Strength Tang
blade juncture on the Hidden Tang Blade that
isnt possible on a Dead soft, or Narrow
Pencil Tang construction. For a Heavy Duty wilderness Blade or High Stress utility blade its Strength Characteristics are Phenomenal for a Hidden tang construction.

Its Tricky to grind and Fit the handle to such a wide Internal Tang but if ya do it right,it has the same Size ratio as a Pencil Tang constructed Knife, but 10 times or more Lateral Strength.

Hey doc
Im jealous as hell. Making knives in shop class as a kid. Damn that would have been fun. They kind of shyied away from those activities here in NYC. Bummer. I am going to try a few more kits though. No reason I cant try them now.

Allen
Im going to have to take a hard look. I was so blown away by the hidden tang knives at the NYC show. Randall and a few others had some beautiful peices and the look of a hidden tang and the reduced wieght were incredible. Someone had a damascus piece and when I picked it up it floated in the hand and this was a 6 inch 3/16 inch knife. I was blown away. I am currenty looking for a hidden tang 5 incher with double guard. I have had nothing but slab style knives but I really was impressed with the balance and beauty of the hiddens. If I want to climb up the side of a moutain using a knife as an anchor or chop down trees, that is what my busse is for. Speed comfort and beauty I think go to the hidden tangs.

Just can`t bring myself to buy a stick tang knife myself. Had one break one time and I`ve never had a full tang break. OF course it was not a randall. Just my opinion.

Post,

Full Tang models have some negatives as well. They transmit the vibration directly to the hand, and tend to be heavier.

I am usually more concern with the maker's reputation and quality control then with the handle style. Hidden tangs can mean anything from the heavy Busse/CS Trail Master/Mad Dog Atak type to a soldered 1/8" threaded rod. The strength of the construction is not readily visible.

Randall models have a good hidden tang.

Alex,
I was just at Goshawks' site today, and Bob was kind enough to respond very quickly to an e-mail I sent him, you should check him out, sounds like this maybe what you're looking for. http://cu.imt.net/~goshawk/
I hope this helps.

A great many of us have had cheap narrow tang knives break on us, and that has caused a lot of suspicion toward that design. Really the only thing "wrong" with the narrow tang design is if it's a K-Mart special on sale for $20 ... you can't tell by looking at it if it's any good or not.

I'm just as suspicious of cheap narrow-tang knives as the next guy, but there is no reason at all to fear that a good knife made with that design will break on you -- certainly not in any but the heaviest use, and some are made strong enough even for that, so strong that if you test it to failure it will break somewhere else.

Himilayan Imports and Ghurka House khukuris are almost all stick tang. They`re usually considered to be brutally strong. I think the main thing is that they need to be done right ,if not they can really suck. Marcus

Rob Hudson makes a great handled stick tang knife, he prefers to make them as you can protect the tang much better from the elements and such, his knives have a great feeling handle and the wood is very pretty to boot!

Most of the knives i make are stick tangs, and I feel like that properly made they are very strong. I always solder the guards, and use a reinforcing ferrule at the junction of grip and guard, many times ferrule and guard are silver brazed into one unit. this makes a nearly indestructible handle. it is all in the details of construction. 'shame so mamy crappy stick tang knives have dimmed the rep of the style.

Just so we're all singing the same song. What do you define as a "stick tang?" My definition is a tang, usually on the small or narrow side, that fits, and is fastened into a hole in the handle material using epoxy or glue of some sort and has no attachment at the butt of the knife handle like a butt cap. Is this about it?

As for Randall's, I know they do make a few of these (most of their models have a full tang or have threads with which to attach the butt cap, denoting a through tang.). But even their stick tangs are not narrow, flimsy tangs but about 1/2 inch X 1/4 inch. Pretty hefty for a stick tang. The length of these tangs varies by handle material and whether a compass is installed in the butt. I prefer a threaded tang screwed onto a substantial butt cap myself.
