I have 5 problems with them.
1.) They vibrate horribly. This I understand is easily fixed with some cushioned grip tape like you'd use on a tennis racquet. I've also been told that a tighter grip on the stick helps, but I loose a lot of mobility if I grip a stick too tight.
2.) They're clear, which can make it more difficult to judge the range, position and plane of attack. If you're drilling at high speed, this could be a problem. I'd imagine that wrapping the stick with something like electrical tape would help, but then you might run into problem with a chemical reaction between the tape's adhesive and the stick material. As I recall, Mr. Finder's web site specifically mentions this.
3.) They are WAY too light. He has solid sticks of varying densities and weights.
4.) I find the noise they make when they strike something to be rather annoying. Some of the solutions to the vibration and visibility problem might solve this one as well. Or, just turn the music up.
5.) You don't get the smell of "burning rattan". There's no way around this one and I do like the smell of the rattan, but that's just a personal thing.
On the upside I understand that they're nearly indestructable, which is why they'd probably be really good for training on a tire dummy. Tire dummies are notoriously rough on rattan sticks, but problems 1, 2, 4, and 5 would be solved. As for #3, again, he does make sticks other than the HITS that are solid and have varying weights.
Respectfully,
Dave Fulton
