Theres usually varnish on the handle anyways, so the best method is a cabinet scraper, or knife to scrape the handle with.
For the head you can scrap or peel it off then use wd40 or acetone or denatured alcohol or lighter fluid...ect to get the residue off.

Thanks for the great tips. I have a new hatchet and Boy's Axe from Snow and Nealy, which have the stickers on each head and each handle. The handle stickers peeled off, but left the usual adhesive residues.
The stickers on the heads aren't cooperative at all.
Will also need to put an edge on each.

Hand sanitize gel is pretty good for lifting these. And most folks have a bottle around these days. I find it sticks onto what I'm cleaning better than rubbing alcohol.

It's good for tree sap residue too.

I've never seen a handle that I didn't want to strip, sand, and refinish myself, so that usually takes care of that. As far as the head goes, one of my axes came with a sticker on the—painted—head, which I've been allowing to wear off as I use the axe.

A radical idea for most members of this forum, but maybe actually use the tool for say, chopping and cutting wood, which works for removing stickers very well.

use oil. just let some oil sit on the sticky areas for a few minutes, and work it in with your finger like you're trying to rub the adhesive off. the adhesive will soften and not stick back on to the surface that you're working on. wipe off when everything is loosened.
