Stickey handles

My son and I were in the gun safe going though our knife collection and we found several rubber handle knives that were sticky or feeling like the handles were deteriorating. Has anyone had this problem and what to do?

Some solvents seem to do that to some rubber compounds. The only solution I've found is avoid rubber handles. I've had that happen to almost every rubber handled knife I've carried for any length of time.
