I'm new to the knife collecting scene, so please excuse my ignorance. I purchased the Spyderco Military, followed by the Delica and the Benchmade 710. All operate smooth as silk. My latest is the Benchmade 690 with the BC1 coating. Opening and closing is a lot stiffer than the other knifes. It almost feels like the blade is sticking a bit. Not the feeling of metal to metal grinding, though.

Is this a function of the coating, or closer tolerances? Should I lubricate, loosen the tension, or just keep opening and closing to work it in? PLease advise before I make a rookie mistake!

BTW, these are awesome knives, with the 690 a real beauty. Any suggestions for rounding out the collection?

I'm no expert, but I've noticed the same thing.

I have 2 BM 814 (mini afck) and a 690 (satin, not BC). The 814's are very smooth and can be loosened so you can flick them open.

When I try loosening the 690, the blade just gets pushed into the side scale. I had it boxed up to send back to the factory, then decided to take it apart myself. The 690 uses what appear to be the same dark gray washers that the 814 uses; I do not think they are metal.

Anyway, I mic'd the washers to see if they were thick on one end, cleaned out any debris and bent out the liner lock some. After reassembly, it is better, but still stiff with that 'rub' you mention. I've decided to accept it the way it is.

Worked on the knife this afternoon. A little Militec, a partial loosening of the pivot, and it's now nice and smooth!

I would tighten the pivot back up again and work in the pivot by opening and closing the knife.

My 690BC1 appears to have quite a detent, so it will always "stick" a bit at the start, but the pivot should wear in nicely over time.
