Sticky Compression Lock

We've all experienced it lol

Well with most of them I just play with the knife opening and closing for a few days and it's good...well my PM2 204p didn't want to break it...so I decided to try a trick I learned for my sticky titanium frame locks. The Pencil trick. It worked awesome.

The pencil trick works on compression locks. Take the pencil and apply the pencil lead on the contact point on the blade.

I just wanted to share. Has anyone else tried this on the compression lock and how did it work for you?

Are you sure you getting it on the right spot?

I did this on two of mine tonight and a couple of emersons and it helped a lot

Nope. It's an angled tang that contacts the lock.

Put the knife on its back so that the blade is off the table when closed. Looking at the knife from the pivot end, this part is closest to you. It's the surface that is angled and facing the ceiling is the spot to apply the pencil lead.

Hmmm. My 204p is the only sticky one I have. Why are all the 204p ones sticky? I use a sharpie on ti frame locks. Seems to work well.

Research the stop pin trick. Basically you rotate the stop pin about a quarter turn. Helps almost every time.
Cheers...

^^ a lot of stop pins are circular on one end but half circled on the other and fit into the liner that way to keep from spinning.

So, my Vallotton is just a little sticky, so where would I apply the lead on it? It has a Walker liner lock of course. Thanx guys

I have owned compression locks on a Superleaf, multiple PM2's and multiple Yojimbo2's. Every one of them to my knowledge had round stop pins on both ends and every one I tweaked to my satisfaction by using the well documented stop pin trick. Never heard of one side of the pin being captured on a Spyderco Compression Lock and not free to spin. Ever...
Best...

If you want to get a coating of graphite onto the lock there is a product used to lubricate locks that is basically fine graphite powder in a spray can. It works well on locks but is a little messy until the solvent dries.
A very small amount of this spray on the tang contact point will probably do the trick. There are also a number of other dry lube products available, there was a molybdenum disulfide product that I used to lubricate guide rails many years ago that was great.

*graphite*
You apply it where the two pieces of metal touch when open.

I apologize Al. I mean to say the sticky part comes into play on my Vallotton when I open it, not closing it. Would I be referring to the detent? Please excuse my ignorance, as I'm still learning, and thank you for your help. Its much appreciated.

Well, after reading your post..and its somewhat condescending tone....I went and grabbed a PM2, Yojimbo 2, Junior, and a Superleaf.
You are half wrong and half right. I said that a lot of compression lots are moonshaped.

PM2 & Yojimbo are Round at both ends, However!

Junior and the Superleaf are Half Moons like I said.

If your Vallotton has a detent ball like the PM2 then you can try to add a drop of grease

I couldn't get the graphite trick to work, may have been doing it wrong. I gave the rotating stop pin trick a try and it freaking worked. That's awesome.

ShepardCC,
Well then apologies are in order, I stand corrected. Thanks for taking the trouble to research it further.
Best...
