Sticky Lock...and I mean Sticky!

Hi all,

Just picked up a 2003 Lg. Classic Sebbie in a trade. I'm thinking I may need to send it in to the shop. Lockbar is hitting the non-lock side in a bad way, I finally got that adjusted a little so lock up isnt to bad, just right actually. My main problem now is the lockbar is sticking on the blade tang so bad I nearly need two hands to dis-engage it, and sometimes, most of the time, I cant even get it dis-engaged at all. Never seen a Sebenza do this so was hoping you all could give me some advice on how to fix it. I've heard yes and no's about putting oil on the blade tang, I tried a pencil, for the graphite. Nothing has helped...I cant get it to quit sticking. What can I do, maybe a little steel wool on the tang to smooth it out? What do you think

Thanks in advance

I would contact CRK. Sometimes a lock bar is not heattreated (slips thru) and the titanium can "gall" against the stainless and really lock up.

I had one with the same issue, although it was just a little sticky. It took alot of break downs / lube jobs and many cycles (100's) to smooth it out. It works fine and locks up just where I want it now (about 33%). For some reason over the last couple of years they need a break in period. Where my older ones were good to go right from the box. Mabye it's the subtle changes they have gone through over the past 4-5 years. Who knows.

Yep, I hate that I just got it as I've really been looking forward to giving the Lg. Classic a little pocket time as this is my first one, but I'm packing it up tomorrow and sending it in. I dont think theres anything I can do to fix this, pretty weird, I've never seen a Sebenza act like this? Oh well, I know CRK will make it right. I'll update when it comes home!

Thanks all,

Hmmm . . . do you know the history of the knife? If I had to guess, I'd say that the knife had had the blade swapped with another sebbie, or the lock mechanism has been "modified".

As far as I know, this is the original blade. I'm pretty sure the person I traded with bought it new, but I cant be for sure. I sent him a message inquiring that, so maybe I'll find that out before it goes in to the shop. If that is the case, what do you think my options are Fooj, will CRK have to swap for a new blade? Or maybe a new lockbar scale?

Thanks

Update:
Okay, I stripped this one down last night and cleaned and relubed it...no dice. Lockbar still sticks really bad. Havent heard if this is the original blade but I'm pretty sure it is. Its off to CRK today.

Thanks for the input all:thumbup:

From your description, I'd surmise the same as you -- either new blade, or new lockbar scale. The chances of your knife having left CRK in the state it's in now is highly improbable. CRK employs a 100% inspection process by a very competent staff (see the CRK DVD for more details, and "meet" Marshal, the QA inspector). I'll be very interested to hear what the seller has to say.

uh, if I was you I'd reverse the trade, it sounds like there has been extraordinary wear on the lock. (Is it heavily scratched on the lock face?)

I'm not sure what to think, and as Dave H. asked. I stripped it down last night. This makes me think the blade is original because there was serious wear to the tang of the blade. I'm mean like a groove had been worn in there, which I have never seen a Sebenza with a notch worn in the tang of the blade from the lockbar and I'm thinking it could only get there over a long period of time. It doesnt look like its been modded, or someone took a file to it, it honestly looks like over time the lockbar has worn a spot into the blade tang. I can only assume the blade is original and has been used alot. I dont really get this though, the blade doesnt have a scratch on it, and the edge looks almost factory new. I suppose it could have been refurbed, but I'm thinking not. Its on its way to CRK today as soon as I get off work. My friend offered to pay for the refurb, if CRK comes back with a very expensive solution I'll either reverse the trade or ask them to pay it.

Hey Fooj, Seller hasnt come back to me with the status of original blade or not, but I do know now that he did buy it from someone else, who bought it new. From above, I still think its the original blade. Oh...and I have and enjoy frequently the CRK Video:thumbup: There QC and Customer service is what keeps bringing me back to them everytime I want to add a new piece to my collection:D

Will update soon!

Just an update:

I found out that I'm the third owner of this one(which doesnt bother me one bit) The blade is original. My friend told me that the person he bought it from said the blade hit the non lock scale when he bought it new, so maybe it did slip through QC...hard to believe, but maybe just this once. Hard to believe they wouldnt have sent it back like that, it being new and all. I sure would have. Anyhow, maybe as DaveH pointed out it did see some hard use, but the blade is mint, and if it was refurbed, I figure CRK would have fixed the lockbar and the stick. Well, its in the mail tomorrow...off to the spa. I'm anxious to see what the CRK team has to say about this one.

Thanks

jprice76-

I have about 15 (and have had about 40 Sebenzas at one time or another) and none of them had the same exact lock up. I sold that one to the person you bought it from brand new, never used.

I know for certain he hardly used it, he just wanted to have a Sebenza. I think perhaps you need to let it break in is the actual problem. Best of luck.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for chiming in! I too have had several Sebenzas, while not 40, I would say closer to 20 from one time to another and feel pretty confident in my knowledge of their mechanics. I agree, none of my Sebenzas have the same lock up and I expect that. I would say though without a doubt that this 3 year old Sebenza is far from break in, its well broken in at this point or so it seems. I'm pretty sure the lockbar doesnt get farther from the non lock side with break in, it gets closer as the lockbar wears. This one has no room for that, when its opened, the lockbar slaps against the non lock scale and then you cant get it unlock. I've tried to adjust it a bit and move the lockup position since you can do that from time to time with some of the ones I've had. Somewhere along the lines this Sebenza was used, heavily I would guess indicated by the obvious wear to the tang of the blade where the lockbar has been forced against the tang. In reality the lockup doesnt really even bother me, I think I can get that adjusted so the lockbar isnt laying on the nonlock scale. Whats driving me is the sticky lock, I have to forcefully use two hands to unlock the the blade from the lockbar, and even then sometimes I cant get it. I have to loosen the pivot and front screw to get it to loosen just so the blade will move a little and disengage.

I got no hard feelings about this Sebenza or my trade...Just want to make that very clear. I appreciate you adding to the thread. The only reason I brought it here was because I thougt the good folks of the CRK forum might have some advice on how to adjust it without sending it into CRK for a tune up. I may be way off basis with my assumptions about this whole thing, I'm gonna send it into CRK today hopefully and see what they have to say. I think they're the only ones who can say for sure what it needs and what the wear on it indicates. Either way, I just want to get it tuned up and into my pocket:thumbup: Dang...I'm ready to use this one.

Again, thanks
