Ok here's a tough one, about three days ago I was making beer and while I was cutting open a packet of malt extract (like super sticky molasses) my Swiss champ slipped into the packet and now it's unbelievably sticky all over the knife (as well as some bits of hops the blade) anyone have a solution on how to clean it? someone I knew mentioned boiling it but I don't know if that would be a good idea with the plastic.

thanks.

try mineral oil, i have never used it on malt, but i have used it on syrup, and we all know that is very sticky.

Hi,

Yeah that malt sticks really well don't it. It's going to take lots of hot, hot water to get it off. I would careful of the scales they may soften a bit during boiling. Just lube it back up and you should be good to go.

What kind of brew you got bubbling?

Hot water is right on. Hope it's a hoppy american ale!

I have cleaned a lot of nasty airport-confiscated SAKS, many with funk of unknown origin on them, gumming up the works.

Wash your knife in a sink full of hot soapy water, just like the dishes.
Use an old toothbrush, pipe cleaners, whatever to get into the small places.
Oh, yeah, be careful not to cut yourself.
Dry the knive on a towel, blow it out with compressed air (the cans they sell for dusting out computers will work), and lightly lube it.

Should be good to go.

If that doesn't work, send it to me and I will clean it myself and return it to you for the cost of postage.

Don't boil it! Just use hot soapy water and a brush. Shake the water out, and flush it with WD 40. Dry. Lube.

Dish washer? I used to throw all my SAKs in there with no problem. Then lightly oil and it's brand new :-) just pull out all the tools so they stick out as if on display.

Thanks for the help guys! I suspended it in a pan of simmering water (in retrospect I should have read all the replys :o ) and let it soak for a little bit just to soften the gunk up and I got the rest off with a toothbrush. The water was a little too hot and it bowed the scales out just a tiny bit and there is a slight crack in the top of the scales, it doesn't really bother me and if it did I could just get new scales. I'm just happy I got the malt off the blade!

I also left the pen, tweezer and toothpick in (duh!:grumpy:) and quite to my surprise the toothpick didn't warp and the pen still works! And for those of you that asked I am making a brown ale, I should be bottling in several days! thanks again everyone  .

For bad SAK's, I pop the scales off, then I just leave them in the dishwasher (several washings) until they loosen up. Then clean by hand. If the scales are in good enough shape, I'll put them back on, if not, I rescale with wood.

After a few runs in the dishwasher, they usually work fine.

thx - cpr
