Zippo fluid works well.
My friend got some tar sealent (they were installing satellite TV by themselves and had to use my knife for something) and end up getting some of them on the blade. Zippo fluid just wiped them off.

Carb cleaner, WD-40, rubbing alcohol, acetone, Breakfree CLP, the list goes on and on. :)

Those have all worked great for me for various cleaning of sticky spots on blades, oils on blades and guns, etc etc etc.

And I will skip any dirty comments on title of thread there. ;)

Zippo fluid will work too.

As a side note on that, primary ingredient in zippo fluid is Naptha if memory serves. Or xylene. Either way, both are paint strippers, so will work for yoru purpose, AND can be bought by gallon for a few bucks that the little 8oz zippo bottle will cost you. Just an idea to save some money. I don't carry a zippo anymore, so can't remember which chemical it was

Another thing to try is Nevr-Dull. That stuff takes off nearly anything that doesn't belong, and makes it shine very nicely afterwards.

Naptha is great stuff. I don't know about it being a stripper though, because I work for a furniture retailer and we use it all the time on a mulitude of finishes. Takes gummy stuff off in a heartbeat.

Naptha is just Gasoline without the lubricant additives that's necessary for a smooth running engine. Naptha is also "Camping gas" or "White gas" that's used in stoves, lanterns and other outdoor appliances. I was once told that lighter fluid has xylene in it. I speculate that they call that mixture napthalene, and they do that to slow the evaporation process of the naptha. I use camp gas in my zippo's and notice that it burns cleaner, and evaporates faster than lighter fluid, which is okay since I buy coleman gas at about 3 bucks a gallon as opposed to three bucks for a few ounces of Zippo fluid.

for a little less toxic cleaner try isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)

just soak some cotton and clean away and then dry off with another towel or piece of cotton.

These products are mostly naptha and work great for removing adhesives without damaging the surface.

They work great and are available almost everywhere.

I keep a Tuf cloth specifically for removing tape adhesive from blades, it works really well.

Goof Off, which is sold at hardware and even grocery stores, is nothing but Xylene in a can.

Xylene is a great solvent for sticky, gooey stuff. I always like to keep a can of Goof Off around. But, it's a powerfull solvent and you have to be very careful with it around delicate materials, wood, etc.

WD-40 is the solvent I always start with because it's so gentle.
