With all of the Schrade/OldTimer knives coming out of the woodwork, I'd like to see a reference topic on knives' ages stuck to the top of the forum. Some info has been posted in the past, but it's scattered throughout various topics and not comprehensively compiled.

I have in mind a permanent reference source including datable diagnostics such as the various tang stamps and packaging. For instance, what are the years of the black-and-red Schrade boxes? What are the dates for OldTimers that are stamped "Ulster" or "Schrade-Walden", etc.

Just an idea,
Bob

My publisher says there is not enough interest to make it worth printing so it is up to people like Larry and your self. Frankly I put out a virtual museum tour for antique domestic automatics, A CD which I made easy to copy and share on purpose. I am afraid that I am no longer as benevolent as I used to be since no one really cared. I did the CD which is different than my book so that unlike the book which in hard cover which cost 49.95 it could be afforded and viewed by all. Pardon my cynacism perhapes you can contact Mr Pipes from Smokey (for information) who is now going back on his word to keep the Schrade collection intact and plans to research each pattern and sell the collection. Of course that is only rumor any takers on a bet? Did you see the Smokey catalogue pic for the new Walden Knife line There is a pic of a knife company on the page and an ad relating the history of Walden knife ( but the pic is of another factory not Walden knife ) do you recognize it? Perhapes I am wrong? If so I would welcome the correction. In the mean time good luck on your project. By the way if you ever want more than the statistics you are welcome to take pics of the actual items regular folders and sheath as well as autos which I have been fighting to be allowed to be displayed legally and have even forced a bill to be introduced in the NYS legislature the facts are still the same NO ONE CARES. By the way My guess is that the new Walden Knives are made by Camilous or Bear on contract. HENSE (great word ) the flag and USA logo. I would pick Camillous. LT angry as usual.

I was planning a trip to SMKW just to see the collection too.. When is the breakup thought to be occuring.. Gotta plan ahead this time. Seriously pissed that the biggest know public collection will be sold in pieces.

As for facts and dates on about everything Ulster, Schrade and the other companies in NY and elseware, LT is our man and Debbie is the woman of Schrade. I too am trying to compile stuff but there is just soo much. They (LT & Debbie) have many years head start on us. Its in their blood.

Just a point of clairification no one in govt seems to care. I know we do.
Is there anything we can do?

Are there other states that manufactured these types of knives in the N.E. area that might be more careing?

All scuttlebutt, word is that this was planned from the git go. However I would like to quote a line direct from the Smokey ad. Made in USA licensed exclusively to SMKW by Schrade knives, a division of Taylor Brands. UMMM Yummy another label gobbled up better than fried rice. Yup Schrade is now a division of good old Ahh SOOO Taylor. Contracted in the USA for right now. I have no idea what Debbie is doing or has planned I wish her only the best in her life. As far as me I am going to have my final hole dug extra deep so that they can throw all this junk in first and then me. That way I will at least prove you can take it with you and me and it can rot together, by the way if you have ideas of digging it up. Those 20 lb satchel charges of ( now obselete ) C4 last a long time underground if you pack them right. You have heard of Tuts revenge mine will be a lot less subtle. The NE has no state that gives a Damn. AZ Go west old man and grow young. Who knows. I will not stop fighting until they shovel dirt in my face I will have to stop then and concentrate on spitting dirt out. You know my motto Deal Me In as long as I am still it the game I know I am alive and still fighting. LT

Well then,

Rich we await you with open arms here in AZ. Come quickly, as some factions are trying to turn us into mush...... :(
We will not cave lightly.....and are holding our own. We would love your collection, maybe in the Colorado River area..... ;)

Larry, hurry out to see us, before the good Lord lights the BBQ that we know as summertime.

Bill

Miles to go before I rest. If I can sort out the things here who knows. I am game in fact I had a friend now like most of my old friends who is deceased. Who used to reply when I would say I am game. " Hell Langston your more than game your gamey " Good night Bobby wherever you are. LT PS I know you always worried about that Budda you paid the kid a crate ( carton of cigs ) to go into the tomb on OKI and get for you might not stand you in to good a light on the other side I hope the big guy let that one slide you deserved a break. I sure do get mauldlin on Saturday nights.

Too many 'stickys' can mess up a forum, but I think you are onto something, Bob. The only sticky we have now was established to help find Schrades still available at retail, and those days are about over. So perhaps that one can go fairly soon, if the membership of the forum thinks it should.

But yes, we gets lots and lots of 'dateline' questions, and as I am not a Schrade expert, I'd appreciate it as well. It might be beneficial to have a sticky where people can post date questions and we can attempt to answer. It would also be easier to correct mis-information if all such questions and answers were in one place. Gradually, with the talent we have here, we would create a complete dateline of Schrades. What do you other members think of this???

The Schrade collection... Yes, SMKW has it, and would they break it up? They did keep the Case factory collection pretty well intact while they were entrusted with it (Parker sold it to them as Case was going down under his watch). With my fascination with the various PH1 and PH2 Loveless style hunters, I've been watching this auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=88910&item=6529672702&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

The seller is Smokey Mountain, of course. Now, would a knife like this have a place in the factory collection or not? It is one of a kind, but apparently there were dozens and dozens of one of a kind knives in the Schrade factory upon closing, all to be tossed into the back of a truck and hauled south.

Again, any interest in a dateline sticky?

And finally, and I will close this long-winded post... It has been a long time since Debbie dropped in. I wonder if we drove her off with all the many questions we had. Bear in mind she has a living to make, and was most likely looking for a job, and perhaps she has one now that is taking up her time. We all wish her the best regardless I am sure.

And Schrade history? Guys, we are responsible for it now, here in this forum. Lots and lots of strange and wierd Schrades making an appearance right now, knives that will trigger lots and lots of questions in years to come.

As I have mentioned before I know collectors who have knives from the Case collection however in fairness they got them from Jim Parker. However as far as the Schrade collection perhapes I am wrong but like I said want to bet? In either event it does not matter he owns them and can dig a hole and bury himself with them ( as I said I might do with my stuff ) . In the name of the history of which we are ( as was pointed we are the proprietors of caretaking) I have included some pics of the three ( main) knife companies from Walden. As you can see for anyone who even has any interest it is quite easy to correctly identify what were three completly different firms in three distinctly different buildings. I realize the importance of this information is about as vital as passing wind in an open field however it seems the facts of this history are passing quickly enough. It should I feel still be possible to identify the original buildings. LT

"the proprietors of caretaking" You have a way with words, Rich, and I like that one. A pretty heavy load for us to haul, individually, but together, I think we can be that.

I like and respect you, LT, but I have to disagree.. as long as a few of us care about things like your photos, and the history of these knives, it really does matter. Look back on some of our posts, of the people who have joined us here and become one of us. Just one single knife, perhaps passed down to them, and they have become hooked.

Phil

Aw Hell Phil we are both on the same team you just are more of a, The glass is half full kind of an optimistic guy while I am the glass is empty kind of pessimist. We will keep throwing the feces on the wall perhapes something will stick. LT

Heck, I didn't mean to open a can of worms or pick at old sores. I just thought it would be cool to compile some sort of data list to help readers identify the ages of their Shrade knives.

I agree that forums with too many semi-permanent topics aren't attractive. But to have a couple of "stickies" of universal interest to Schrade enthusiasts would be a good sign of organization and helpfulness. The existing sticky has just about worn out it's usefulness (maybe not completely, yet).

Best Wishes,
Bob

No old sores at all, Bob. Nor any cans of worms. All you have done is make an excellent suggestion that will help the forum and those who visit us.

What we need for starters is a first post with the basic dates of Geo. Schrade, Schrade Cutlery Corp, Schrade-Walden, Imperial, Imperial-Schrade, ect. brands/tang marks. This would answer so many questions new people with "Grand dads" old knife would have.

I would ask one of our more seasoned Schrade collectors to make such a post... then I would request CougarAllen to make it a sticky. Only if the membership here agrees.

Anyone???

Phil

You know you've got my vote.

Here's what I have in mind. Not a complete database of knife models (that would be nearly impossible and generally unnecessary), but simply a list with dates of the various brands, tang stamps, and packaging.

-Bob

Sounds like a winner to me. I have been trying to decipher mfg. dates by tangstamp for a while now on a few patterns I own. Shared patterns between Imperial, Schrade, and Colonial get confusing when you throw in Ulster and the others.

Codger

Hello,we have been stamping all our blades with the date we manufactured the knives.
Example: Colonial
05
Prov.,RI.

Best Regards,
Steve
Colonial Knife

Nice of you to drop in, Steve. Hope your business is going well. Wishing you the best. Great idea putting the dates on the knives.

I'm been working on a timeline, trying too to work in the different packaging eras. Difficult to say the least. As we have often discussed here, Schrade/Walden/Ulster/Imperial, ect, are all very convoluted and confusing.
